Nature Reserve "Wilder Kaiser"

Since the 1920s people have been working tirelessly to create a natural retreat around the unique sanctuary of the Kaisergebirge mountain range. One who particularly engaged himself was Fanz Nieberl, or “Kaiserpapst” (emperor pope) who was one of the first and foremost to protect this environment. His thoughts received no acclaim in a time of fast infrastructural development.

However, in 1961 a referendum determined that this precious range would become nature reserve. On 19th April 1963 these positive changes were made official. The Kaiser Mountain Range comprises of over 102km² of natural reserve. There are a multitude of wild and tamed peaks, towns, and sights to discover. Amongst the long list of things to see there is the Kufstein, St. Johann in Tirol, Ebbs, Ellmau, Going, Kirchdorf, Scheffau and Walchsee which all lay between 480m to 2,344m above sea level (at the Ellmauer Halt).
